The Prophecy

Image
The thunder spoke obstreperously in the air, as if the very heavens might shatter. It declared to all the untamed forces of nature and gave fair warning of the wrath that was to come. In the woods, trees trunks moved and made creaking noise acquiescing to the swift commands from the hostile breeze. Tom sighing heavily, ran as 'fast' as an octogenarian with ankle weights.  He pushed aside each blade of grass on his path when suddenly, a huge tree fell and landed right before him. It obstructed his movement. On his left hand side, was nothing left and on the right hand side was nothing right. A dead end it's for him. Jerry's nap breached by the noise that accompanied the fell. He stared at Tom for few seconds, and then unveiled a laughter that sounded as of Lucifer welcoming a sinner to the Hades. Possessed with the speed of light, he disappeared farther away from Tom, and further into the woods. Jerry's left foot appeared from under a creeping gra...

Becoming a God

Image
Across from me, beyond the iron jaws of the prison gate, He stood—tall, gaunt, eyes deep as forsaken wells, Grey whispers of hair pleading against the creeping void of baldness. With hands weathered by death’s cold touch, he poured liquid steel, A silver vessel birthing oil onto a stone slab, His fingers twirling round the severed blade, A lover’s caress upon the guillotine’s wicked tongue. Doom shadowed me, a false charge branding my soul, My devotion to the throne now but a fleeting ember. Xerxes, blind to the truth, deaf to my cries, The palace council—wolves in gilded robes— Sealed my fate with whispers sharp as daggers. Had he forgotten? My king, my lord, How once I shattered the goblet of venom, How I snatched him from death’s coiling grasp? Yet now, his Empress, Cassandane, draped in silken malice, Arrived before the baying hounds, eager for the theatre of my demise. The headsman grinned, his glee a blade as keen as the one he honed, Steel kissed wood—a plank sundered like wind ...

In those days when humans ate just what they needed, that there was no immigration law and organised religion causing unhealthy rivalry was not in existence; people lived in peace with NATURE. In those days, it was an abomination for anyone to die of hunger and starvation for the system of living then was Communal and not the materialistic seeking system giving delusion of wealth accumulation whereas in the actual essence...everyone is poor, poor to death and condemn to decompose and rot. Talking about that old Oyo Empire with a well structured seat of governance, and the convenience of the people was more of a great concern to the leadership. At the declining state of this once upon a great Kingdom, greed and selfishness crept in and things were fast falling apart. It was during this era that a notorious gang of arm bandit did terrorise the innocent citizens of the Kingdom; they were merciless and fearless. So, the King of Oyo Empire (Ikú bàbá yèyé, aláse ìkejì oòsà)...

Ìléré

I still don't get it. How does a family rise to become ruler over multitude? This is not a form of government which is by the people and for the people. No - I don't just understand monarchy. How will a child claim superiority to a grown on the basis that he is a royal blood.  Oh what a distortion  humanity. And then I see the government form for the people by the bankers and corporations. What a shame. Ìléré the faithful slave in the palace received favour in the kings' sight among her fellow slaves. She was assigned with the role of keeping the king's royal mug. She was faithful with her designation.  So one day, the Prince got drunk and then accidentally fell upon the royal mug. It broke into pieces, but no one saw the prince fell upon it. Ìléré was accused of breaking the royal mug. She maintained her innocence but no one believed her. The Prince, the culprit did not confess. The king's fury rose against her, after all she was just a slave. T...

Ìjàpá ọkọ Yáníbo (Ìjàpá the husband of Yáníbo)

Image
Ìjàpá ọkọ Yáníbo Tortoise the husband of Yáníbo We eat to live, we shouldn't live to eat. As this reminds me of the ancient Yoruba folklore that my grandmother told me about Ìjàpá the husband of Yáníbo. She said, "Yáníbo couldn't conceive, and because of the great importance attached to procreation, Ìjàpá and Yáníbo were greatly disturbed." I know that even till today in our society, women are mostly blamed for not being able to conceive. A very wrong assumption, men are mostly the cause for this anomaly. Granny explained that Ìjàpá consulted a herbalist (Babaláwo) as suggested by his wife, and the man gave him the concoction he had asked his wife Yáníbo to come and collect earlier. 'Don't taste it Ìjàpá, it is solely prepared for your wife,' the herbalist told Ìjàpá.  On his way home, Ìjàpá got enticed by the sweet aroma of the concoction and fell for the temptation. He ate what was not meant for him to taste. And when he got home,...

Shrew and Squirrel with Tortoise

Image
In those ancient days when human beings were not in existence, the rest of the animals ruled the affairs of the world. They talked, and shared cultural heritage without having any known religion. They met regularly at a place where buying and selling were done. Elephant was the Market Leader while Lion was the Deputy. These animals had their individual weaknesses, for they were not perfect. The smelling Shrew was known for his love for fighting, and Tortoise was notorious at intruding into matters that were not of his concern. So on this particular day in the market square, a fight broke out between the Squirrel and the Shrew. Every other animal did not bother to settle the fight because, Shrews was a renowned trouble-creator. So, it's expected that any sensible animal will avoid Shrews as much as possible. Tortoise because of his love for rumor mongering; always wanting to break every news, adding and removing details as he liked, rushed to the scene of the fight. Wh...

Olúrónbí

How are we going to judge this scenario of Olúrónbí a mother who made rash vow just because of her selfish attitude. In those days, humans worshipped certain trees for protection, provision, fortune and success.  Everybody went before the Ìrókò tree, asking the divine tree for blessing while making pledges of Sheep, Ram, and Cow in return. But Olúrónbí because she wanted to make great fortune pledged her only daughter to the tree. She forgot that promise is a debt, she didn't realise that it is better not to make a promise rather than not fulfilling it. Her daughter warned her against her vow, but she didn't listen. Ìrókò tree granted, and instead of Olúrónbí to fulfil her pledge, she dropped a measly Fowl for the Ìrókò tree instead of her daughter.  Ah, Ìrókò tree seized her daughter. She thought that she could fool the divinity. You don't deceive your benefactor, don't act smart. But then, people gathered to try and rescue Olúrónbí's daug...
